Apply for a Leadership Position in the CAFLP

Applications due October 25th, 2019


What we are looking for?

We are seeking individuals to serve in a leadership capacity within the CAFLP in the following positions:

  • 5-11 individuals for the Board of Directors (to serve a term of two years)

  • 5 individuals for the Operations Committee (to serve a term of one year)

    • including: 1 individual or collection of individuals, and a host institution to lead the organization of the 5th CAFLP conference


What positions are open on the Board of Directors?

We are seeking 5-11 individuals for the CAFLP Board of Directors. The Board of Directors oversees the association and helps with strategic direction.  The Board of Directors is responsible for organizing the annual meeting of the members, where the strategic direction of the CAFLP will be discussed.  Individuals must be members of the CAFLP to apply.

Individuals can apply for the following positions:

  •  President (1) – The President coordinates the CAFLP Board of Directors, chairs all Board meetings, acts as a spokesperson for the organization, and is responsible for leading the Board in implementing the strategic plans and policies of the CAFLP.

  • Vice-president (1) – The Vice-president assists the president and Board of Directors in implementing the strategic plans and policies of the CAFLP assumed the duties of the president if he/she/they is unavailable.

  • Secretary (1) – The Secretary records minutes of all CAFLP Board of Director meetings and is responsible for communication with CAFLP membership.

  • Treasurer (1) – The treasurer oversees the CAFLP budget and ensure the financial transparency of the organization.

  • Director (1-7) – Directors will sit on the Board of Directors and participate in all Board meetings and organizational decision-making.


What positions are open on the Operations Committee?

We are seeking five individuals to serve in leadership positions within the CAFLP Operational Committee.  The Operational Committee coordinates the day-to-day activities of the CAFLP, including the listserve, the website, the working groups, the annual conference and any other activities of the Association. Individuals must be members of the CAFLP to apply.

Individuals can apply for the following leadership positions:

  •  Academic Co-Chair (1) – The Academic Co-Chair is a graduate student or faculty member who co-leads the Operational Committee of the CAFLP.  The Co-Chair cannot sit on the Board of Directors.

  • Practitioner Co-Chair (1) – The Practitioner Co-Chair is a practicing lawyer who co-leads the Operational Committee of the CAFLP.  The Co-Chair cannot sit on the Board of Directors.

  • Student Network Chair (1) – The Student Committee Chair is a law student or articling student who coordinates the Student Network within the CAFLP.

  • Communications (1) – The Communications Chair coordinates the emails, listserve, social media and other communications of the CAFLP.

  • Conference Director (1) – The Conference Director is the main contact point for the Conference Organizing team (see more details below).

What about conference organizing?

In 2020, the CAFLP will host its 5th annual conference.  The Conference Director leads the conference organizing committee (made up of lawyers, academics and students from across the Canada)  and hosts the conference at their home institution.

Individuals, and their institutions, may apply to host and lead the coordination for the 2020 conference.   


How will individuals be selected?

Applications will be reviewed by a Nominations Committee made up of current members of the Board of Directors as well as the CAFLP. The Committee will make a recommendation to all CAFLP Members at the first Meeting of the Members, on November 7, 2019, at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law.  Members in attendance will then elect individuals to fill the positions.
